The Jammie Awards was conceived by Station Manager Michael Packer and WYCE programmer (and recurring Jammies MC) 'Michael J' Van Denend. Originally titled "The Wammies" until it was pointed out that this was the name of a Washington DC awards show. The tradition of wearing your 'jammies' to the show started here at the suggestion of WYCE programmer 'PJ'.
The intention of the original Jammies was to highlight the national and international 'Folk, Blues, Jazz, Rock and Worldbeat' music played by the community radio station, while bringing together several local bands for one big night of music. A single local award was handed out for 'Local Artist of the Year' to blues band Roberta Bradley & Gypsy.
