Texier, a self taught double-bassist from France who came to prominence in the jazz and alternative world in the 1960s for his work with Don Cherry, and later in the 1980s for his band Transatlantik Quartet, delivers a mellow yet driving original take, playing all the instruments (save maybe the orchestration) on his own: bass, percussion, oud, vocals, and more. I love the circular nature of Texier’s version, with the arrangement falling in and out of itself as new elements are introduced and taken away.
