This Saturday, February 11, The Pyramid Scheme presents the first headlining performance by Alexander Lynch. Lynch is a Grand Rapids-based vocalist with music influenced by electro-soul and indie sensibilities.
WYCE Artist of the Day, Joey DeFrancesco returns with the new album, Project Freedom. DeFrancesco was born in 1971 that into a musical family that includes three generations of jazz players. His father “Papa†John DeFrancesco was an renowned organist who received Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame’s Living Legend Award. Joey took to playing organ at a young age and signed with Columbia Records at age 16. That same year he joined Miles Davis on his European tour and later played keys on Davis’ album Amandla. He has since released at least one album every year except 1997. In addition to Grammy nominations in 2004 and 2010, DeFrancesco is a 9-time winner of the Down Beat Critics Poll (organ) and has won the Down Beat Readers Poll every year since 2005. DeFrancesco is an inaugural member of the Hammond Hall of Fame, inducted in 2013 along with other musicians that included Brian Auger, Billy Preston, Steve Winwood, and his mentor Jimmy Smith.
On Nov 24th, 1980, Dizzy Gillespie invited 5 jazz legends - Milt Jackson, James Moody, Hank Jones, Ray Brown, & Philly Joe Jones - to join him onstage in Montreal to play tribute to the legendary Charlie Parker. A limited quantity bootleg LP of the concert soon appeared and then disappeared from the marketplace and the tapes lay dormant for over 30 years. The pristinely restored “Concert of the Century†is now available on audiophile 180 gram 2LP vinyl and CD via the Justin Time Essentials Collection.
