Artist of the Day***Soul and R&B artist and poet Jamila Woods leads off the 3-day Festival of Faith & Music at Calvin College this Thursday, March 30th. Woods is a prominent emerging voice addressing issues of womanhood and the black experience. Inspired by artists such as Erykah Badu, Imogen Heap, and Kendrick Lamar, she uses “choral layering in addition to the hip-hop tradition of sampling & allusionsâ€. Last year, Jamila Woods released her first album HEAVN to critical acclaim and was featured on the song “Blessings†from collaborator and fellow Chicago-native, Chance the Rapper’s Grammy-winning album Coloring Book. Her poems have been included in multiple anthologies including The Breakbeat Poets: New American Poetry in the Age of Hip-Hop, Courage: Daring Poems for Gutsy Girls, and The UnCommon Core: Contemporary Poems for Learning & Living.

Oliver Wang describes their music as "a mesh of Brazilian bossa nova and samba with spacey psychedelia with slow jam soul with surf rock cumbia."
