Are you a Michigan musician or know of a few talented artists?
Jack Owens, Along With Friend Skip James Was One Of The Players From Their Home Town Of Bentonia Who Used Minor Key Tunings In Their Guitar Playing, Which Gave It Quite A Different Feel To The Dark Tones Of The Classic Delta Blues Heard Further North In Clarksdale. Owens Did Not Seek To Become A Professional Recording Artist, Preferring To Farm, Bootleg Liquor, And Run A Weekend Juke Joint In Bentonia For Most Of His Life. Owens Shared Many Qualities With Skip James, But While Skip Went North In 1930 To Record, Jack Stayed Behind Playing Locally On The Weekends. 'Re-Discovered' During The Folk/Blues Revival Of The 1960's, Jack Recorded His First Album At Age Sixty-Six. A Recipient Of The 1993 National Heritage Fellowship Awarded By The National Endowment For The Arts, Jack Owens Passed On In 1997.
