A Top Notch, In-Demand NYC Based Session Guitarist Whose Guitar Solos Were Featured On Many R&B Recordings During The 1950's And '60's. Learning to Play On a Cigar Box Guitar, Wild Jimmy Graduated To A Fender Telecaster, And In His Later Career To A Gibson Les Paul Which He Modified By Sawing Off Most Of The Body, And Founded A Nightclub Trio For Most Of The 1960's. Working Odd Jobs For The Next Twenty Years, Spruill Worked Occasional Gigs The Final Decade Of His Life. James Edgar Spruill Passed On In 1996.

'820' Jazz Presents: Shadow Wilson, Drums...Ahmad Abdul-Malik, Bass...John Coltrane, Tenor Saxophone...Thelonious Monk, Piano - - - - - - - - Documents One Of The Most Historically Important Working Bands In All Of Jazz History, A Band That Was Both Short-Lived And, Until Now, Thought To Be Frustratingly Under-Recorded. The Monk Quartet With A Still Flexing-His-Wings John Coltrane Ran Through Two Flawless Sets That Evening, A 1957 Thanksgiving Jazz Benefit Concert Captured On Tape By The Voice Of America For Broadcast Overseas At A Later Date.The Tape Was Stored At The Library Of Congress Where It Sat Untouched For Forty-Eight Years. In 2005 The Recording Was Discovered In A Loosely-Labeled Storage Box By A Recording Lab Supervisor. This Discovery Substantially Increased Coverage Of Monk And Coltrane's Partnership; The Only Other Recordings Known Are From 4 Sessions That Took Place In The Spring And Summer Of 1957.
