"The Water Is Wide" (also called "O Waly, Waly" or simply "Waly, Waly") is a folk song of Scottish origin. Cecil Sharp published the song in Folk Songs From Somerset (1906).
The song has been covered by many musicians and has become a jazz standard. The first hit version was Bessie Smith's 1923 recording, which stayed on the charts for four weeks peaking at No. 6. This version was originally released around 1976.
"Pony Blues" is a Delta blues song written by blues musician Charley Patton. Patton recorded the song in June 1929. This version is by Alvin Youngblood Hart.

The writer of the song is unknown; however it is believed it originated in a language other than English. It was recorded in the 1930's as "The Gallis Pole" by folk singer Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter. The song has been covered by numerous artists including Odetta, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Steeleye Span and perhaps most famously Led Zeppelin.
With a primal voice that could rise from a guttural howl to an ethereal falsetto throughout the course of a song, Johnson possessed a complex and technically advanced guitar-playing style that influenced a generation of Mississippi bluesmen, including Howlin' Wolf and Robert Nighthawk. No relation to Robert Johnson or Lonnie Johnson.
In an early blues field that boasted a number of innovative guitarists, Lonnie Johnson was without peer. With a sense of melody unmatched by pre-war players, Johnson was equally capable of knocking out dirty blues and fluid jazz phrasings, and he invented the practice of combining rhythmic passages and solo leads within a single song.

Joseph Nathan "King" Oliver (December 19, 1881 – April 10, 1938) was an American jazz cornet player and bandleader. He was particularly recognized for his playing style and his pioneering use of mutes in jazz. Also a notable composer, he wrote many tunes still played today. He was the mentor and teacher of Louis Armstrong. His influence was such that Armstrong claimed, "if it had not been for Joe Oliver, Jazz would not be what it is today."
