The writer of the song is unknown; however it is believed it originated in a language other than English. It was recorded in the 1930's as "The Gallis Pole" by folk singer Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter. The song has been covered by numerous artists including Odetta, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Steeleye Span and perhaps most famously Led Zeppelin.

With a primal voice that could rise from a guttural howl to an ethereal falsetto throughout the course of a song, Johnson possessed a complex and technically advanced guitar-playing style that influenced a generation of Mississippi bluesmen, including Howlin' Wolf and Robert Nighthawk. No relation to Robert Johnson or Lonnie Johnson.

Joseph Nathan "King" Oliver (December 19, 1881 – April 10, 1938) was an American jazz cornet player and bandleader. He was particularly recognized for his playing style and his pioneering use of mutes in jazz. Also a notable composer, he wrote many tunes still played today. He was the mentor and teacher of Louis Armstrong. His influence was such that Armstrong claimed, "if it had not been for Joe Oliver, Jazz would not be what it is today."

The oldest known recording of this song, under the title "Rising Sun Blues", is by Appalachian artists Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, who recorded it on September 6, 1933. This track is with Kid Rock. Nicknamed the Killer, Jerry Lee has been described as "rock n' roll's first great wild man and one of the most influential pianists of the 20th century. A pioneer of rock and roll and rockabilly music, Lewis made his first recordings in 1956 at Sun Records in Memphis. He career faltered and he transitioned to country music in 1968. He returned to his rock n' rolls roots in his later albums.
