Blues Plate Special:April 26, 1886 GA - December 22, 1939 GA - - - Ma Rainey Could Make A Good Claim To Be The First Blues Singer, Belting Out A Blues Song With Power And Passion. At 16 She Was Touring The South Singing In A Minstrel Show, And For Nearly Twenty Years Toured The Deep South With Various Tent Shows And Circuses. Rainey Played With Tampa Red, Blind Blake And Louis Armstrong, Saw Several Of Her Recordings Become Blues Standards With A Few Showing The Juicier 'Hokum' Style Of The Blues. After The Wall Street Crash Of 1929, Rainey Retired From Music, Went Back To A Comfortable Life In Georgia For The Next Ten Years, Passing On In 1930. The Original Blues Diva Left A Huge Legacy For The Later Generations
