Blues Plate Special ; Original Release 1959 - Master Stylist Of Blues Guitar; Dry And Scratchy Vocals Gave His Songs And Spontaneous Stories a Rich, Poetical And Profound Urgency. He Performed With Blind Lemon Jefferson, Went On To Be His Lead-Boy While Honing His Chops In Houston. Hopkins Did Some Jail-Time In The 1930's, Vividly Describing Working On A Road-Gang And Being Shackled To His Bunk At Night. Upon Release He Recorded Several Sides In 1945, Returning To The Clubs Of Houston As His Rustic Style Was Overwhelmed By The New Sounds Coming Out Of Chicago. The Folk/Blues Revival Brought Hopkins A Whole New Audience Thirsty For The Stripped Back Pain And Despair Of Authentic Blues. His Late In Life Recordings Are Considered Must-Have Essentials For All Blues Fans. Samuel John 'Lightnin' Hopkins Is A Blues Pioneer, Passing On With The Shackle Scars On His Ankles, And A Deep Scar From A Stabbing Wound To His Chest At the Age Of 69 (1982)
