a note about this track
Blues Spotlight (LP): A Soulful Biloxi Singer Who Went From Busking To Signing A Major-Label Record Deal. Overseas, He Was A Genuine Hero, Performing For Thousands. But On His L.A. Home Turf, Sand-Blown Venice Beach Served As His Makeshift Stage; his Was The Way Ted Hawkins Kept Body And Soul Together. Influenced By The Voice Of Sam Cooke, Hawkins Drifted For Years, Recording A Few Demos In the Mid-1960's With No Success. Much Of 1970's Found Addicted to Heroin And Behind Bars. In The Mid-'80's, Producer Bruce Bromberg Convinced Hawkins To Re-Release The Sides Recorded Two Decades Prior. Hawkins Refined His Style With Deep South Spirituals And Soul Music; Was The Subject Of a Documentary In 1987, And Released His Official Major Label Album, "The Next Hundred Years" In 1994, And Toured Steadily On The Basis Of This Success, Finally Reaching The Age Where He Was Able To Sing Indoors, Out Of The Weather to An Appreciative Crowd. Ted Hawkins Passed On At The Age Of 58, A Few Months After The Release Of This Breakthrough Recording.
