Local Resonance

Local Resonance showcases the people in our community through the music in their lives. The show focuses on three main aspects of music in West Michigan: locally created, original music, live music events taking place in our area, and the music that people in Grand Rapids are listening to.

The following piece was contributed by media producer and filmmaker Gretchen Vinnedge. It tells the story of Char Vinnedge, a pioneer in 1960s female rock -- taking women-led bands a step beyond the "girl groups" of the day. In this piece, you'll hear the voices of Gretchen and her husband, Phil -- Char's brother. You'll also hear original music from Char Vinnedge and her band "The Luv'd Ones".

Introduction

Local Resonance Show 4
December 28
a note about this track

Welcome to Local Resonance, I'm Kevin Murphy. Local Resonance is WYCE's new program dedicated to West Michigan's music scene. Local Resonance doesn't just play music from local artists - instead, we like to say that we tell the stories of people in our community through the music in their lives. That means that we'll take a look at music that's produced and created locally, but we'll also feature live music events from local, national and international acts, and we'll take a look at music of all kinds that the people of West Michigan are listening to. On this week's show, we'll take a look at some of the highlights of 2007. John Sinkevics and Troy RYE-mink from the Grand Rapids Press join us to talk about music past and present. We'll hear what the good people of West Michigan are listening to with another installment of My Three Songs. And, more listener-created content, media producer Gretchen Vinnedge will share the story of her late sister-in-law, female rock pioneer Char Vinnedge. All that, plus this week's in-studio guests, Ultraviolet Hippopotamus. Right now, let's start with some music from local band Potato Moon -- also known as The Lonely Jones. Their album "The Life of the Lonely Jones" won the local album of the year award at WYCE's Jammies in February 2007. Now, they're back with another album, this time using the alter-ego, Potato Moon. Despite their being West Michigan men and women, we'll listen to a song they call "Georgia Man" from the new album, "After the Harvest".
