The Chinese People
Local Resonance ThemeN/A
Local Resonance showcases the people in our community through the music in their lives. The show focuses on three main aspects of music in West Michigan: locally created, original music, live music events taking place in our area, and the music that people in Grand Rapids are listening to.
Seth Bernard and Daisy May are currently in Chicago, recuperating from the cold that seems to be taking out West Michiganders left and right. So, in their place, we'll hear from the band Hawks & Owls, who are sharing the bill with Seth and Daisy at tomorrow's Water Festival at Wealthy Theatre. But first, let's listen to some music from Seth and Daisy. The first song we'll hear is from their self-titled album. It's a track called "My Family", talking about how everyone on earth is interconnected. Then, we'll hear Daisy May's song "Letter from Downstream", which she wrote to draw attention to the environmental impact of a proposed sulfide mine in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. After that, Hawks and Owls will join us in-studio.
Welcome to Local Resonance, I'm Kevin Murphy. Local Resonance is WYCE's new program dedicated to West Michigan's music scene. Local Resonance doesn't just play music from local artists - instead, we like to say that we tell the stories of people in our community through the music in their lives. That means that we'll take a look at music that's produced and created locally, but we'll also feature live music events from local, national and international acts, and we'll take a look at music of all kinds that the people of West Michigan are listening to. On this week's show, we will disprove theories put forth by Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo and the Wright Brothers. Yes, those people claimed that something called the "airfoil" or "wing" is necessary for man to fly. This week... we prove that man can actually fly with the assistance of a thin piece of denim. Yep... We're flying by the seat of our pants. Why? Because our in-studio guest for this week, Seth Bernard, called in sick! Fortunately, local old-time string band Hawks & Owls were able to come in at the last moment as a substitute. They'll tell us about the show they're playing at Wealthy Theatre tomorrow with Seth Bernard, Daisy May, Rachael Davis and several other great local musicians. But, before we get to that, we'd like to congratulate local rock band Bless You Boys for having their debut album, "Armed to the Teeth" chosen as the local album of the year by our friend John Sinkevics of the Grand Rapids Press. We'll listen to a song from that album, then we'll hear from a couple other folks from the Press about some great upcoming live music events in West Michigan. Now, here's Bless You Boys with the song "Unspeakable Love"...
