Local Resonance

Local Resonance showcases the people in our community through the music in their lives. The show focuses on three main aspects of music in West Michigan: locally created, original music, live music events taking place in our area, and the music that people in Grand Rapids are listening to.

a note about this track

Welcome to Local Resonance, I'm Kevin Murphy. Local Resonance is WYCE's new program dedicated to West Michigan's music scene. Local Resonance doesn't just play music from local artists - instead, we like to say that we tell the stories of people in our community through the music in their lives. That means that we'll take a look at music that's produced and created locally, but we'll also feature live music events from local, national and international acts, and we'll take a look at music of all kinds that the people of West Michigan are listening to. On this week's show, our guest is Mexican-born local bluesman, Tomas Esparza. He'll show off his harmonica skills and talk about recording his new disc, live at Naya. We'll also take a look at live music events going on throughout March, with Tricia Woolfenden and Troy Reimink from the Grand Rapids Press. And, we'll have the first installment of several My Three Songs features compiled by Mrs. Jazwiec's 8th-grade class at St. Thomas the Apostle school here in Grand Rapids. But first, we're going to start out the show with music from two upcoming guests on Local Resonance -- something old and something new of sorts. First, we'll hear from one of the most established names in West Michigan music, Brian Vander Ark, who will be our guest on March 21st. Then we'll hear from a new band, Simien the Whale, who will join us next week. Here is the song "Evangeline" from Brian Vander Ark's recently released self-titled album. As you'll hear, this song talks about the days of Brian's international fame with The Verve Pipe in the 1990s, and where he's come from there.
