For 20 years El Mundo Musical has brought the best regional Mexican hits to West Michigan. Since the beginning, Oscar Zuniga has been the program's musical maestro and guide.
Oscar Zuniga was born in Noriega Ranch, Texas in 1927, and moved to Grand Rapids in 1951. He was self-taught in radio and cut his chops at WKJR in Muskegon, buying time to promote the Mexican dances he was staging at the time in West Michigan, as well as in Lansing [MI], Ohio and Indiana. That was followed by WMAX 1480 AM in Grand Rapids. There was also a stint at a radio station in St. Johns, Michigan. Eventually employed by Wyoming Public Schools, he was asked to teach classes and cablecast on the Wyoming Public School's cable television channel, Channel E, and then broadcast from WYCE 88.1FM when it began. Oscar was one of the driving forces behind the school's application for a radio frequency. He developed the show El Mundo Musical, which was the only Mexican music show of its kind at the time. El Mundo Musical continues today Mondays through Fridays 5:30 a.m.-7:00 a.m., and Sundays from 6:00-8:00 a.m. on WYCE 88.1 FM.
