Natacha Atlas

Mish Maoul

2006-05-08

Born in Belgium of Middle Eastern decent, globetrotter “Atlas” (her real name) creates a body of work that refuses to be categorized (yet still must be), mishing Western urban electronic beats with traditional Afro-Arabic sounds. Mish Maoul brings Atlas “back to her roots” in collaboration with Count Dubulah with whom she first worked in “Transglobal Underground” and on her debut release back in the early ‘90s. The new album targets the sound and traditions of the music she grew up with in the Moroccan suburb of Brussels, particularly when the Golden Sound Studio Orchestra of Cairo makes an entrance. She’s also a good belly dancer, and was the goodwill ambassador to the UN Conference Against Racism in 2001. -Pete
