Daude

Neguinha te Amo

2003-10-16

Terrific release from a very confident and talented young woman!
One of the best worldbeat releases of fhe year --- no doubt about it.
Daude (pronounced Dah-oo-jee) has produced a Brazilian version of Aretha Franklin's "To Be Young Gifted and Black" --- a kind of declaration of independence, asserting her gender, her country and her musical roots in Africa.  Great singing and instrumentation from opening to closing beat.  There are many highlights, from the infectious opening track to the piercing trumpet of Ala-La-O (#2), to the sampling of French movie music on #4 and #11, to the unstoppable beat of "E Foi Mamae"(#8) and the guitar work on
Dora (#10).  Every track is strong and there are some intriguing stories being told if you read the lyrics.  Outstanding!
