Django Unchained: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

The soundtrack to Django Unchained is different than other soundtracks to Quentin Tarantino films in that it is full of original songs written specifically for the film. As one might expect from Tarantino, there are instrumentals from the great Italian composers Ennio Morricone and Luis Bacalov. There are also some surprises such as the Americana elements on the southern-rock song "Too Old To Die Young" by Brother Dege. There is a mash-up of James Brown and 2Pac ("Unchained"), rap from Rick Ross ("100 Black Coffins"), and an R&B song by John Legend ("Who Did That To You?"). The few non-original songs are obviously from Tarantino's own collection, as one can hear the pops and hisses of the vinyl ("I Got a Name", "Sister Sara's Theme"). In between all these gems are wedged bits of dialogue from the film. This is a fine soundtrack. Rebecca Ruth
