MO'FONE

'Fonology

2014-04-19

Wielding two saxophones and drums, Mo'Fone makes a big noise for a little trio. For 'Fonology, its third release, the band is adventurous in its approach, but the music maintains its accessibility...and its groove.  With the addition of musical guests on sousaphone and trombone, the music often has a New Orleans sound ("No Nugget). The dark "Sideminder" is a favorite of mine and it sports fine tom-tom work from drummer, Jeremy Steinkoler.  The Middle-Eastern sounding "That and the Other" is another favorite. It is quiet with tabla and didgeridoo adding to the haunting sound.  All in all, I am happy to have been introduced to this fine San Francisco-based trio with this release.
