Matt Black spreads his genre across techno and electronica in Peace To Matteo, the first production release from the Detroit-based solo artist. Black is also the founder of the label Young Heavy Souls, which focuses its artists mainly on electronic music. The electronic music scene is ambiguous and sporadic, and the average listener probably could not discern trip-hop from trap, but Matt Black defines his genre as Splash Hop, which, judging by this release, concerns itself with chill vibes, vocal samples, and a trippy atmosphere. The ten approachable tracks progress fluidly with some earworms that I couldn’t help but turn my speakers up to. Having already reviewed another release from this label, Tape-C by Mishigami, I know I’ll keep my ears open for more.
