Ribbons of Song

Comb My Cowlicks Down

2007-06-14

Being a graphic designer, I was first drawn to Ribbons of Song by the curious package in which he encased his recording. After my initial listen, I nearly forgot this as the compositions encoded on the disc struck me as very well-crafted, thoughtful, and beautiful. Ribbons of Song writes the perfect music for summer, fall, winter, and spring. Essentially, it is seasonally transcendent. For those familiar with Sufjan Steven’s Asthmatic Kitty label, you might wonder as to why Ribbons hasn’t been signed up by the neo-banjo hero himself. Combining both clean production and lo-fi aesthetics with predominantly acoustic instrumentation, Ribbons of Song’s music is something I am surprised I didn’t discover earlier. I have lived in Grand Rapids for a year, after all. Reviewed by Trevor Edmonds (May 2007) (All tracks clean)
