TIFT MERRITT

ANOTHER COUNTRY

2008-01-26

On her third disc, Tift Merritt treads the same earnest path traveled by countless singer/songwriters who craft discs with heartfelt lyrics and pleasant instrumental backing. The problem with this approach is that unless the songs strike an emotional chord with the listener they are nothing more than pleasant background music. By and large that is the case here with the bulk of the songs drifting on by with little to distinguish one from another. Exceptions include the popish sounding "Broken", the lush and warm "I Know What I’m Looking for Now", the slightly rocking "Tell Me Something True", which hits home with some saucy horn charts, and "My Heart is Free" which has a heavier electric groove.
