THE SOUL OF JOHN BLACK

The Good Girl Blues

2007-02-05

This is an exciting album, something that we’ve been waiting on for a long time but just finally received. Compared to their debut a few years ago, this is less challenging musically but falls into more of what you might expect it to be—and certainly catchier. The songwriting remains superb, and no matter what they do stylistically they succeed. From Soul to Folk to Blues to jazz to guitar rock, every track makes a distinct impression. If Robert Randolph and the Family band took an introspective sabbatical, smoked a few Js together and recorded their next album in a dark room they might sound like this. -Pete
