The tremors of Wim Wender’s 1999 Cuban music documentary The Buena Vista Social Club are still being felt on American shores. One revelation from the film was the voice of Havana’s Omara Portuondo, known by many as the Grand Old Lady of Cuban Music.Omara first joined Cuarteto Las D’Aida in 1957 and spent 15 years with the ensemble. Her first solo release came in 1959. Through the 70’s, she toured the world with the Orchestra Aragon.
Her career had largely quieted down in the years previous to the film, but renewed interest has lead to a partnership with Nonesuch Records and this second resulting album.
