John Scofield continues to blaze the trail for jazz guitarists with his knack for blending creativity with marketability. The latest example of this rare talent is displayed on That’s What I Say: John Scofield plays the Music of Ray Charles.

The project provides Scofield the rare opportunity to incorporate vocalists into his work while creating reverent interpretations of his hero’s music. He asked many of his soul-vocal icons to assist and many agreed: Dr. John, Mavis Staples, Aaron Neville, Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes and even John Mayer all provide lyrical assistance.

The project also matches Scofield with longtime producer and drummer Steve Jordan, Willie Weeks on bass, and Larry Goldings on the keys.
