The desert region of the African country of Mali is one of the most musically fertile areas in the world, spawning the world’s first blues sounds and evolving a dynamic music tradition all its own.

In the last half-century, Malian society has been stricken with numerous conflicts - civil-war, draught and poverty - that have given rise to an urgent musical revolution. Electric guitars have been taken in arms to express the distress survivors feel toward their lives in an encroaching modern world.

The Malian band Tinariwen is a group of Toureg tribesmen that’s pioneering this blend of rock, deep blues and nomadic music.
