When Under the Western Freeway was first released in 1997, I wrote it off as uninteresting and a bit too quiet. Perhaps my tastes have changed over the years. Upon listening to Grandaddy's first full-length in its entirety, fifteen years later I'm a convert. Consisting of Jason Lytle's breathy vocals over fuzzy guitar and analog synthesizer, Grandaddy's music has a dreamy quality to it. Add to this anthemic crescendos and themes of loneliness and you end up with pretty, though depressing stuff. Rebecca RuthThe Sleeping Gypsies
