Vocalist and pianist Rachael Yamagata spent her childhood splitting time between the New York City home of her Italian/German mother and the Washington, D.C. home of her third generation Japanese father, finding music to be a constant in an otherwise turbulent time.

She majored in theatre at Northwestern and found herself on the Chicago club circuit eventually hooking up with the band Bumpus (aka Natty Bumpus and the Booty Whompers) with whom she performed and toured for six years.

Shortly after splitting with the band her solo work gained the attention of Private Music who will release her debut album Happenstance on June 8th.
