CENTRO-MATIC

Take Pride in Your Long Odds

2014-05-12

Texas-based Centro-matic has been doing its thing for 17 years and now, with Take Pride in Your Long Odds, for eleven albums.  Being unfamiliar with Centro-Matic, I heard the first track and was hooked, thinking the moody rock instrumental might be a taste of things to come.  Unfortunately, it is the oddball track on the album, the one most bands save for the last track, if there's room.  Aside from the awesome, yet ill-fitting title track, the new album features Will Johnson's raspy vocals backed by drums and fuzzy rock guitars for a country-tinged rock sound.  Sometimes keyboards show up, making things sound a bit more indie, but more often than not, this is straight up texas rock.  Rebecca Ruth
