Amadou and Mariam

Dimanche a Bamako

2005-08-09

The husband and wife team of team of Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Doumbia, who met in the mid 1970s at the Institute for Blind Youth in Bamako (the capital of Mali), present a start-to-finish infectious set of music. The beat never quits, and at times feels African, other times Latin and yet other times American r-and-b. Check out "Senegal Fast Food" (#5): to my ears I'm hearing Donna the Buffalo rhythms! Manu Chao, the famous Latin worldbeat artist born in Paris, was blown away after hearing this duo and helped put this fine disc together, playing on most of the cuts himself.
