Sonic Trance

Nicholas Payton’s first album for Warner Brothers becomes the first bold jazz statement of 2004. Sonic Trance immediately harkens to mind Bitches Brew-era Miles Davis, with its echoed trumpet and loose psychedelic ambience. The album further ventures into Afro-beat, reggae rants, funk-fusion, trip-hop and other controlled-substance craziness.

Payton garnered a Grammy-nomination for his 1997 collaboration with then 90-year-old trumpet great Doc Cheatham, an album also available in the WYCE library.
