SHARRIE WILLIAMS

Out of the Dark

2012-04-13

Sharrie Williams is advertised as the "Princess of Rockin' Gospel Blues" in an attempt to categorize her vocal delivery and songwriting. She is not a gospel artist per se--nothing on this disc brings a strictly religious message--but her tempo, phrasing and occasional lyrical references reveal gospel roots. That's particularly true in the title track (the only song she did not write), "Prodigal Son" and "Choices." She says her musical idols are (among others) Etta James, Koko Taylor and Patti Labelle and those are good reference points to what you will hear. Williams made her musical mark in Germany and continues to be very popular there; that lends credence to the humorous "City Limit Musicians," in which she berates a band that doesn't like to travel. Interesting to note that Williams was born and raised in Saginaw and all of the vocals on this record were recorded at the "Center of Attraction Church" in Saginaw. I had to check that out and yes, on the church website it says the name came to Pastor James in a 1976 vision (so I ain't arguing). Michael J. 04/12 B-Contemporary
