Fortune at 68 is in fine form. On this instrumental cd he is mostly playing alto saxophonist but he reminds us that he’s also a creative flute players on “‘Round Midnight”. Fronting a quartet with George Cables on piano, Chip Jackson on bass and Steve Johns on drums—Fortune plays some standards with a straight ahead style “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “Besame Mucho,” “The End of a Love Affair. All songs are delivered with finesse, lyricism and the sharp, reedy tone tha is Fortune’s signature. Reviewer Anne LamontCLIFTON ANDERSON
