The Micros have been around for twenty-plus years and have arranged and recorded plenty of Monk's tunes in that time. "Friday the 13th" includes six previously recorded arrangements and six pieces newly arranged just for this album. The Microscopic Septet does Thelonious justice by applying their trademark progressive big band style to these classic compositions. Surprisingly, "Round Midnight" is not included in this and that's just as well, because there are plenty of other awesome Monk tunes to be had on this one. Rebecca RuthKarrin Allyson
