The Lucksmiths

Warmer Corners

2005-05-09

I was lucky enough to attend The Lucksmiths' recent show in Grand Rapids. It was a love fest as the four delightful and adorable men from Oz spun their cheerful optimism in front of a devoted following due, in part, to promotion efforts by local MicroIndie label owner Mike Babb. Guitarist Marty Donald says "Warmer Corners" is the band’s most accomplished effort to date and after about eight releases, that’s a lot of schoolin’. As ever, drummer and warm crooner Tali White connected with the masses alongside Tasmanian bassist Mark Monnone with the pretty hair, and their newest addition, Louis Richter, stolen from Mid-State Orange. The standing-room only audience was treated to many songs off the new disc from the wildly received “The Chapter of Your Life Entitled San Francisco,” to “I Don’t Want to Walk Around Alone No More” where Tali demonstrated a piercingly accurate whistle. The Lucksmiths sing about love lost and found and lost again but in such a happy and joyful way it’s hard to imagine there were many tears.
