Broods
Self-Titled EP
2014-02-08
Broods are a brother-sister duo from Auckland, New Zealand. In early 2013 they began working with Joel Little, who produced fellow New Zealander Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O'Connor's (better known as Lorde) Grammy nominated album Pure Heroine. Much like Lorde, Caleb and Georgia Nott are young (21 and 19, respectively) musicians who make glossy pop perfect songs. Their single "Bridges" swiftly garnered attention - receiving 200,000 plays on Soundcloud in just a few days from posting - and demonstrated that the Notts are similarly poised for commercial explosion.
Their self-titled debut is comprised of 6 finely-tuned gems that capitalize on Georgia's breathy voice (which turns ethereal when approaching higher registers) along with Caleb's trancey synth-driven compositions. Little's production is slick and measured, with each song possessing a pulsing dance beat and grinding melodies. Even if the songs are obvious and will most likely end up on a promo for "Girls," they are undeniably catchy and not overtly derivative or boring. The first half of the EP is the strongest, including tracks "Never Gonna Change", "Pretty Thing", and "Bridges" which will almost certainly guarantee Broods some deserved widespread recognition.
Recommended Tracks: #2 "Pretty Thing", #3 "Bridges"
